Celebrating Excellence in Basic Education: Building Strong Foundations for Ghana’s Future
The Ghana Private Basic School Excellence Awards (GPBSEA) 2026 is a national recognition platform established to identify, celebrate and promote outstanding private basic schools contributing significantly to the development of education in Ghana.
The Awards recognise that the foundation of every successful education system begins at the basic level. From early childhood education through primary and junior high school, private educational institutions continue to complement public education by expanding access, introducing innovative approaches to teaching and learning, investing in educational infrastructure, and creating diverse learning opportunities for Ghanaian children.
The Ghana Private Basic School Excellence Awards therefore seeks to provide a credible platform through which exceptional institutions, innovative educational practices and meaningful contributions to basic education can be recognised and celebrated.
Background to the Awards
The establishment of the Ghana Private Basic School Excellence Awards was preceded by background research and a comparative assessment of private basic schools operating across various communities.
The research was undertaken to develop a better understanding of the private basic education landscape and to ensure that recognition under the Awards goes beyond institutional popularity or school size.
The preliminary research considered information available through education-sector databases and institutional sources, including school location, ownership and level of education. Particular attention was given to identifying eligible private basic schools and understanding the different environments within which they operate.
The exercise also involved a comparative review of schools competing within similar geographical and educational environments.
Rather than comparing every private school in Ghana on exactly the same basis, the Awards recognises that schools operate under different circumstances. Established international schools, community-based private schools, Montessori institutions, educational complexes, faith-based schools and emerging schools may have different resources, educational models and areas of strength.
This informed the development of multiple award categories designed to recognise excellence across different dimensions of basic education.
Areas Considered in the Background Research
The research and preliminary assessment considered several indicators relevant to quality basic education, including academic development, teaching and learning environment, school leadership, educational infrastructure, early childhood provision, innovation, technology integration, character and values education, learner support, safety and wellbeing, extracurricular development, institutional growth and contribution to the surrounding community.
For international schools, additional consideration is given to areas such as international curriculum delivery, multicultural learning, global citizenship, multilingual education and internationally oriented teaching practices.
The process also considers the competitive environment of schools within their respective municipalities and communities. This approach allows the Awards to recognise not only nationally prominent institutions but also deserving schools making significant educational contributions at the local level.
Municipal Recognition
A major component of the 2026 Awards is the recognition of private basic schools across the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies of the Ghana.
The municipal-level assessment is structured around three principal recognitions:
Overall Best Private Basic School recognises an institution demonstrating strong overall performance across several dimensions of basic education.
Best Private Educational/School Complex recognises institutions providing comprehensive educational services across multiple basic education levels and demonstrating strength in institutional development and learning delivery.
Best Early Childhood Education School recognises excellence in the crucial formative stages of education, including crèche, nursery, kindergarten, Montessori and other structured early-years programmes.
This decentralised approach is intended to broaden recognition beyond a small number of highly visible schools and highlight educational excellence occurring within different communities.
International Basic Schools Recognition
The Ghana Private Basic School Excellence Awards also recognises the important contribution of international schools operating in Ghana.
A dedicated international education segment has therefore been incorporated into the Awards to recognise achievement in areas including international curriculum delivery, academic excellence, multicultural education, international primary education, multilingual education, holistic child development and innovation.
The objective is to acknowledge the diversity of Ghana’s basic education landscape while maintaining appropriate distinctions between different educational models.
Beyond the Award Plaque
GPBSEA is intended to become more than an annual ceremony.
The long-term objective is to create a platform that encourages healthy competition, continuous improvement and knowledge sharing among private basic schools.
When excellence is identified and celebrated, successful practices can become examples for other institutions. Schools are encouraged to strengthen teacher development, improve learning environments, embrace responsible innovation, invest in early childhood education, strengthen safeguarding and learner wellbeing, and continuously improve educational outcomes.
The Awards also provide an opportunity to bring together school proprietors, administrators, educators, parents, policymakers, education-sector stakeholders, development partners and corporate organisations around a common objective: improving the quality of basic education available to Ghanaian children.

The 2026 Ghana Private Basic School Excellence Awards will celebrate schools whose work demonstrates commitment, innovation, resilience and excellence in educating the next generation.

the event will bring together leading stakeholders within Ghana’s private basic education sector to recognise institutions contributing meaningfully to educational development.
The maiden edition represents the beginning of a broader effort to document excellence, encourage higher standards and give deserving private basic schools national visibility.
